President Karyn Lefco called the meeting to order at 6:35 pm. A total of 19 members were present (quorum).

I. Treasurer’s Report:

The Treasurer’s report was available for review by all members present. Marcia’s report there is $6,793.28 in the MA PTA savings account, and $7,990.91 in the MA PTA checking account. Receipts for November 2015 totaled $8,243.98 ($6,109.25 Fall Fundraiser; $1,460.50 Apparel; $245.00 membership; $12.82 Multi-language Welcome banner; $416.00 NYS PTA; $0.47 interest). Expenses for November 2015 totaled: $4,506.31 ($518 3rd Grade field trip; $105 Presidents’ and Principals’ Dinner; $375 Magicman Entertainment – Super Science Saturday; $275 PTAC Dues and activity Fund; $184.05 Big Apple Crunch; $3,049.26 C&H Fundraising – Fall Fundraiser).

II. Principal’s Report:

Mrs. D’Agostino stated that the Encampment held in October was a success and will be returning next year in some form. She also stated that Super Science Saturday was also a success and was highly attended by Malta Avenue students. The following events will be taking place in the next few weeks:

 Parent Teacher Conferences / ½ days for students will be held on Thursday through Tuesday (Nov. 19 to Nov. 24).

 No school – Wednesday Nov. 25 through Friday Nov. 27 (Holiday)

 Holiday Parade to be held on the first Friday in December (Dec. 4). Students (accompanied by an adult) are welcome to join in the parade.

III. Vote on Meeting Minutes from November 27, 2015:

At 6:41 pm, Andy Bodein made a motion to approve the minutes from the November 27, 2015 meeting. Mrs. D’Agostino seconded the motion, Gail Weiss provided a third for the motion and at 6:42 pm the motion was approved by the membership present.

IV. Vote on expenditure for Character Ed Shirts:

At 6:45 pm, Gail Weiss made a motion to approve the creation of a budget line for the one time expense of $943 to pay for the new Character Ed Shirts purchased for all of the Malta Avenue Students. Melissa Kreider seconded the motion and at 6:47 pm the motion was approved by the membership present.

V. Vote on expenditure for Traveling Art Museum Display:

At 6:48 pm, Gail Weiss made a motion to approve the expenditure of approximately $1,000 for a 10-week session for the Traveling Art Museum Display. Kim Moryl seconded the motion and at 6:49 pm the motion was approved by the membership present. The Malta Ave PTA is considering a second session of the Traveling Art Museum prior to the end of the school year; however, the membership present is deferring that vote until a later PTA meeting, closer to the time of the potential second display.

VI. New Business / Round Table Discussion:

 The Malta Ave PTA is trying to encourage participation and membership with parents and local businesses.

Ideas are being developed to increase the membership such as:

o Swag Bag – Getting local businesses to support the PTA by joining and PTA to provide free advertising. A discussion was held regarding increasing the membership cost to these members, possibly by having levels of membership. Gail indicated that $4 from every membership goes to the NYS PTA; therefore, anything collected above that amount would stay with the Malta Ave PTA.

 Volunteers needed to work on development of this idea. Interested persons may contact any of the PTA officers.

 The rights to the URL: maltaavepta.org has been obtained for use by the Malta Ave PTA. The intent is to have a forum to post items such as agenda, meeting minutes, current events, etc. The link will be available on the Malta Avenue School website for parents, but will be maintained by the PTA.

 Ideas on fundraisers are still welcome.

o Volunteers needed to work on the development of this website and then also the maintenance of the website once it is live. Interested persons may contact any of the PTA officers.

o In lieu of the basket raffle, an idea of “auction bidding” was brought forward where the people would actually bid/pay for the item directly making the fundraiser not be about a game of chance, which is why the basket raffle cannot be held. Gail Weiss, Mrs. D’Agostino and Karyn Lefco will be researching this idea further and will consult with Nancy Fodera of the PTAC.

o Parent Night Out – possible fundraiser

o Art Sale through Square Art (where you take the children’s art, and turn it into an item – ordered by parents).

o December 15 is the deadline to submit final fundraisers for this school year, but ideas are still being reviewed for possible use in the next school year.

o Mrs. DeGregorio (teacher, 4th Grade) was not present but provided an idea to Karyn prior to the meeting. A program through the Ronald McDonald house is available which is similar to PARP. Information on this program was handed to Mrs. D’Agostino for review as there were concerns that there might be an issue with turning PARP into a money-making event.

 Andy Bodein stated that Super Science Saturday was attended by approximately 42 Malta Avenue Students, which was second (according to percentage of children attending the school) to Wood Road. He also stated that the committee for Super Science Saturday is looking to move the date back to their original date in January for upcoming years.

VII. Up-Coming Events:

 Empty Stocking (November / December). To volunteer, please contact Kathleen Coleman, Mrs. Lewis or Karyn Lefco.

 Holiday Shoppe (December 14 – 17). To volunteer, please contact Cindy Bunbulsky

Please send all newsletter submissions to maltaschoolnews@gmail.com by the 20th of each month.

The meeting was informally adjourned at 7:30 pm. The next PTA meeting is January 26 at 6:30 pm; however, the location is to be determined.

Respectfully submitted, Kelley Tuohy, Malta Avenue Elementary PTA Secretary.

A correction was made to the September 29, 2015 Treasurer’s report. In error, $17,987.14 was reported in the MA PTA checking account in September 2015; however, Marcia reported that the correct checking account balance was $6,240.98 as of the August 31, 2015 statement.

II. Vote on Revised 2015-2016 Budget:

Mrs. D’Agostino also stated the Encampment was held on October 15 where the First and Second Grades were able to tour the camp and the Third through Fifth Grades were able to visit and watch exhibits such as the tin smiths in honor of the upcoming Quarter featuring the Saratoga Battlefield. She also stated that Author Susan Garvey visited the school to talk about her book about bullying. October was fire safety month at Malta Ave. where several fire drills were conducted along with a visit from the local fire department. Mrs. D’Agostino also indicated that Carrie Woerner was coming to the school on October 28 to speak with the children about reading.

IV. Minutes from September 29, 2015 Meeting:

At 6:52 pm, Kim Moryl made a motion to approve the minutes from the September 29, 2015 meeting. Marcia Godden seconded the motion, and at 6:53 pm the motion was approved by the membership present (11).

V. Round Table Discussion:

 Volunteers / chairpersons are needed still for several upcoming PTA events. Karyn also indicated that membership is low and she asked for suggestions to improve / increase membership.

 The Malta Ave. PTA has been awarded the PARP Award for the Northeast Region. The PTA was also awarded the “Early Bird” award and a Bronze medal for membership.

 Jim Lovett discussed the use of voice-recording devices and streaming of future PTA meetings

(audio/video).

 Meeting Minutes and the Agenda for future PTA meetings can be uploaded onto the Malta Ave. PTA Facebook page and discussions are taking place to start a Malta Ave. PTA website to be accessed through the Malta Ave. School Parent Page.
